Houston-based Markel Global Marine & Energy Inc. (MGME) has announced it has opened a department to handle ocean marine, the company's newest line of business.
Steve Cullen, MGME president and chief operating officer, announced R. Matt Sternenberg, with the title of director of marine underwriting, will head the new department.
The firm said Mr. Sternenberg's background includes over 15 years in the marine and energy insurance field.
MGME's new Ocean Marine Department is designed for clients that are involved in or are supporting the brownwater marine industry, including barges, tugboats, and other commercial vessels and businesses operating primarily on or near inland and coastal waterways. It will also handle businesses involved in the import or export of goods by vessel or aircraft, the company said.
MGME is one of the Richmond, Va.-based Markel Corp.'s North American Group of Companies.
