Sheboygan, Wis.-based insurer Acuity, which offers flexible work time arrangements to its workers, has been named one of the Best Employers for Workers Over 50 by the American Association of Retired Persons.
It was the second year that the carrier, which offers commercial and personal lines coverage, has been recognized by AARP, Acuity noted.
This year the firm's Best Employer ranking rose to 16th in the nation, up from 37 last year. The insurer employs 850 persons.
Employers who are nominated for the AARP's award are evaluated for their recruiting practices, workplace culture, continued opportunities, employee benefits, and retiree benefits.
According to Deborah Russell, AARP workforce issues director, Acuity's sensitivity to the needs of older workers is a key reason the insurer was ranked among the top 20 employers nationwide. “With a growing number of mature workers wanting flexible work arrangements, Acuity meets those needs by offering alternative work arrangements,” Ms. Russell noted.
She added that this flexibility also benefits younger workers who are caregivers for aging family members. “Balancing work and family obligations and caring for aging parents is difficult. Acuity recognizes the needs of caregivers which makes them an attractive employer for all workers,” she said.
“Acuity is committed to providing a great workplace for all our employees, whether they're 25 or 65,” said John Signer, Acuity human resources vice president.
Mr. Signer said that being a Best Employer for Workers Over 50 is also significant because of the changing nature of the workforce. “People over age 50 are a growing percentage of total employees nationwide,” he noted.
“Also, we know that experienced employees have a lot to offer to both our agents and our own business. Therefore, being a great place to work, for as long as people want to work is crucial,” he added.
Acuity operates in 16 states, writes over $800 million in premium through 800 independent agencies, and manages $2 billion in assets.
The firm notes that it is the only company in the nation to be named four consecutive years to the Great Place to Work Institute's top five mid-sized companies.
