The Allstate Corp. announced today that Michele Coleman Mayes has been named the firm's general counsel and senior vice president, succeeding Michael J. "Mick" McCabe, who is retiring.

The Northbrook, Ill.-based insurer said Ms. Mayes, formerly senior vice president and general counsel for Pitney Bowes, will head Allstate's Law and Regulation department, "which plays an integral role in guiding Allstate's business strategy."

In that post Ms. Mayes will direct all of the corporation's legal and public policy activities and serve as a member of the senior management team reporting to Thomas J. Wilson, Allstate's president and chief executive officer.

Mr. Wilson said Mr. McCabe made significant contributions in his 36 years with the company and Ms. Mayes had the "right mix of corporate legal experience, as well as an excellent background in public policy and government affairs."

The company said Ms. Mayes has been identified as one of America's top African-American lawyers, having served in leadership positions at Unisys Corp. and Colgate-Palmolive, in addition to Pitney Bowes, working on international legal matters, human resources, mergers and acquisitions, and government affairs. She also served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in Michigan and New York.
