Richmond, Virginia-based excess and surplus lines insurer Max Specialty Insurance Company said it has hired Michael Miller as chief underwriting officer for the company's new marine division.

Mr. Miller began his career at Wm H. McGee & Co. Inc. in 1973 and has since worked for several companies in marine insurance-related positions, most recently as a senior vice president and chief underwriting officer for Fireman's Fund Insurance Company's Specialty business unit, Max Specialty said.

Mr. Miller has been a member of the Inland Marine Underwriters Association and served as its chairman from 2004 to 2006.

Stephen Vaccaro, president and chief executive officer of Max Specialty, said Mr. Miller will play a key role in the company's effort to establish itself as a major provider of marine insurance.

Mr. Miller said the company "is off to a great start as an emerging leader in the E&S business," and he hopes to help move it "to the next level."

Max Specialty is the U.S.-based E&S platform of Max Capital Group Ltd., of Hamilton, Bermuda.
