Travelers announced today that the insurance company is teaming up with a nonprofit organization to provide low-income residents with an educational CD-ROM to help them make homes they own or purchase safer.
The insurer said the interactive disks will be given out by Travelers Home Safety in partnership with the NeighborWorks Insurance Alliance, a program of NeighborWorks America, a group created by Congress to provide financial support, technical assistance and training for community-based revitalization efforts.
Hartford, Conn.-based Travelers said homeowners that are aware of ways to reduce their risks can improve their cost of insurance and reduce their losses.
The insurer said NeighborWorks America has more than 235 nonprofit affiliates across the country and will provide copies of the CD-ROM to all of them at no charge. Later this year additional diskettes will be sent out, said Bill Allen, a manager with the Travelers Diversity Marketplace Group.
The program will be incorporated into the NeighborWorks' homeownership education programs.
Todd Pittman, national director, Corporate Partnership Development, NeighborWorks America, said the CD-ROM is "one more tool that will help in building safer and healthier communities for many NeighborWorks organizations and low-income residents who rely on our services."
Travelers said it will offer a 5 percent discount on its homeowners insurance policy to Travelers customers who successfully complete the Travelers Home Safety program, which will be offered at seminars run by NeighborWorks America.
The Safety Seminar premium credit is currently available in California, Colorado, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Maryland, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, Missouri, Georgia and District of Columbia.
Mr. Allen said typical of the information provided by the seminar is how to maintain the integrity of a home's fireplace, when to repair or replace a roof, proper window and door lock equipment, use of outdoor grills, fire prevention equipment, and handling of flammables. Most who attend are buying their first home, he said.

Travelers said it has been working with NeighborWorks America to address the availability and affordability of homeowners insurance for low- to moderate-income homeowners in urban communities.
