A Connecticut-based insurer's international division said it is planning to open an office in Australia headed by the former chief executive of GE Solutions in Asia.
Berkley Insurance Company, a member of Greenwich, Conn.-based W. R. Berkley Corporation, said it plans to open a reinsurance facility in Australia–its first office in the country–to be headed by Grant Robson.
The office, to conduct business under the name Berkley Re Australia, will be headquartered in Sydney. It will focus primarily on underwriting casualty facultative and treaty reinsurance upon receiving regulatory approval.
The opening of the operation awaits regulatory approval. The company said it has filed an application with the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority to establish the branch.
Mr. Robson was named president and chief executive officer of Berkley Re Australia. He has over 34 years of experience in the insurance and reinsurance business in Australia. He previously served in senior positions with major reinsurers including, most recently, as president and chief executive officer of GE Insurance Solutions for the Asia Pacific region.
