Michael Snead, the former chairman and president of Cherry Hill, N.J.-based surplus lines carrier Admiral Insurance Company, died last week in Horseheads, N.Y., after a long illness. He was 80 years old.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was widely known as the “ambassador-at-large” of Greenwich, Conn.-based W.R. Berkley Insurance, the parent company of Admiral Insurance, filling different roles wherever the help was needed.

He was an avid golfer and was a stock market enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Margarete Rinke Snead. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug. 9.

He is also survived by his son, Thomas; daughters Lorraine Armour and Jane Ivanick; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a son-in-law; several daughters-in-law; nieces; nephews; cousins; and numerous friends.

Services will be held at the Lynch Funeral Home in Horseheads, N.Y., on Aug. 11 and 12. Interment will be held in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, N.Y., on Aug. 13.

The family requests those wishing to remember Mr. Snead to do so through memorials to the charity of their choice.

The American Association of Managing General Agents University has established a Michael Snead Memorial Fund.
