Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) said it has begun publishing a new research journal “Variance: Advancing the Science of Risk.”

The Arlington, Va.-based group said the publication's peer-reviewed articles focus on original practical and theoretical research in non-life actuarial science and related areas in the science of risk.

Its publication, CAS said, is aimed at casualty actuaries and other risk professionals in general insurance worldwide.

The inaugural issue includes articles on topics such as risk transfer testing of reinsurance products, extended service contracts, mortgage insurance, financial modeling, and loss reserve estimates.

Those writing for the first edition include authors from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“We hope to maintain a good balance between practical and theoretical articles so that every casualty actuary will be able to find something of interest,” said Gary Dean, FCAS, editor in chief of “Variance,” and vice president and actuary for Travelers Insurance.

The Variance Web Site, www.VarianceJournal.org, provides online access to the journal and guidelines for submitting papers and subscription information. Subscriptions are available free for one-year and can be requested through the site.

“We are actively soliciting papers from authors who may not have traditionally published in CAS journals. This should bring a wider range of ideas into the new journal and, hopefully, more non-CAS members will become regular readers and contributors,” said Mr. Dean.

Audio recordings of presentations of the journal's research papers are also online.

To be accepted for consideration, papers should fit into one or more of the following categories:

? Research–contains original ideas and new material.

? Educational–instructs actuaries and others involved in analyzing, modeling, and managing risk.

? Practical Application–provides synthesis of existing distinct processes, solutions to substantive problems, expositions of actuarial practices, or compilation of current techniques.
