Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink applauded a 14-year prison sentence handed down against Thomas Daniel King, former owner and operator of the defunct Jacksonville-based Miralink Group, Inc., a professional employee organization that left thousands of workers without coverage despite collecting more than $5.8 million in premiums. King was also sentenced to serve three years of probation after completing his sentence and pay a financial penalty of $250,000. King was convicted on 23 counts of federal wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering as part of a nationwide scheme that involved 33,000 employees. (For background information, see June Florida Underwriter, “Workers' Comp Fraud Ring Shut Down,” page 49.)
Also convicted was Michael Lee McCafferty, the former chief financial officer of TTC Illinois who was sentenced on April 18 to three years in prison and ordered to pay $7 million in restitution. TTC was once one of the largest leasing companies in the state with offices in Tampa and Boca Raton. “Floridians suffered greatly because of greed and we are determined to hold everyone involved accountable,” said Sink.
