Lloyd's insurance market announced yesterday that it has appointed brokerage executive Jose Ribeiro as its new director of international markets and business development.

Mr. Ribeiro, previously Willis' managing director for Latin America and member of Willis International's management team, will be responsible for promoting the market across the globe, seeking new business opportunities and monitoring the development of emerging markets, Lloyd's said.

He will manage the market's international operations in Europe, Asia, Australasia, Africa and South America, Lloyd's added, and will alongside Sue Langley, the newly appointed director, market operations and North America, complete the senior management team for its international coverage.

Lloyd's Chief Executive Officer Richard Ward said Mr. Ribeiro's appointment is an important step forward for Lloyd's and that the new hire's experience as a broker, underwriter and actuary "will be invaluable to us."

At Willis, Mr. Ribeiro's "contribution to our Latin American business is one of the factors that has put Willis International in the strong position that it is in today," said Grahame Millwater, Willis chief operating officer. He said Mr. Ribeiro would work with Willis in coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Before joining Willis, Mr. Ribeiro was president and CEO of Delphos Group in Brazil, a third-party administrator providing services to the insurance market, and earlier served as president and CEO, AIG Life Companies, Brazil.
