InVEST, the school to work program sponsored by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, said it has awarded 42 scholarships totaling $43,000 to students pursuing insurance-related degrees.
The awards were given after 150 scholarship hopefuls from across the country submitted essays describing the influence and benefits the InVEST program had on their educational plans.
InVEST said the quality of the essay, combined with the applicant's grade-point average, extracurricular activities and college entrance exam scores, were factors in selecting the recipients.
Scholarship checks are mailed directly to the institute of higher learning that each student is attending and will be used exclusively for educational expenses.
The scholarship awards ranged from $2,000 to $500.
The Alexandria, Va.-based program's Teacher of the Year Award was bestowed on Cheryll Small, from Florida's Miami Coral Park Senior High School, providing her with $500 for use in her InVEST classroom and $500 for personal use.
Frank Chiarello of Ace Risk Management in New York received the 2007 Dach Award volunteer award for fostering growth and development of InVEST. He received a $1,000 cash prize.
