Wholesale insurance broker AmWINS Group Inc. has named a new president, with the current president relinquishing that position but remaining chief executive officer.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based firm said last week that W. H. "Skip" Cooper joined AmWINS as its president. Steven DeCarlo, AmWINS' president and CEO, will continue in the capacity as CEO.

Mr. Cooper was an executive with CRC Insurance Services, the wholesale brokerage subsidiary of Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T Corp.

The firm also announced that James Drinkwater has been named chief operating officer of the company's brokerage division. He will work closely with Mark Smith, president of the division, to implement and execute the sales and marketing strategy, particularly focusing on working with the company's retail agency clients and insurance markets.

Prior to assuming this new role, Mr. Drinkwater ran the New York office of AmWINS Brokerage, a responsibility he will continue to hold.
