Bermuda-based Aspen Insurance Holdings Limited reported first-quarter net income nearly doubled to $122 million compared with $61.8 million during the same period in 2006.

The earnings per share figure of $1.27 this quarter rose 115 percent compared to the last quarter.

Underwriting income for the quarter of 2007 increased 134 percent to $90.5 million, compared with $38.7 million for the first quarter of 2006.

The combined ratio for the quarter dropped to 79.4 from 90.4, while net investment income increased 52 percent to $67.5 million from $44.5 million in the same year-ago period.

Chief Executive Officer Chris O'Kane said that all product segments performed well in the quarter to produce an annualized return on average equity of 22.9 percent.
