The Association of Professional Insurance Women has selected H. Elizabeth Mitchell to receive the group's 2007 “Insurance Woman of the Year” award.
Ms. Mitchell has been president of Platinum Underwriters Reinsurance Inc. since 2005. APIW said she is responsible for managing various underwriting profit centers and for her company's information technology, account processing and administration functions.
A reception and award ceremony is scheduled for June 14 at the New York Marriott Marquis.
Steven H. Newman, chairman of Platinum Underwriters Holdings Ltd. of Bermuda, said in his nomination that Ms. Mitchell is “a remarkable executive who is highly skillful, ethical and also compassionate.”
Ms. Mitchell is active in industry groups and is currently vice chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Board of the Brokers and Reinsurance Markets Association.
She also sits on the board of the Reinsurance Association of America.
In addition, Ms. Mitchell is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, as well as a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the International Association of Actuaries, along with APIW.
The APIW award–first presented in 1976–”recognizes exceptional women who have achieved prominence in the insurance industry,” the group said.
APIW President Maryanne Sherman said Ms. Mitchell's leadership and accomplishments, as well as her commitment to supporting and advancing women in insurance, “are exceptional examples of all the qualities that APIW looks for in the recipient of this highly prestigious honor.”
