The Travelers Companies Inc. and its two private foundations awarded $15.5 million to charitable organizations in fiscal year 2006, the insurer said.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based company announced that the insurer and its charitable foundations, Travelers Foundation and Travelers Connecticut Foundation, primarily gave to education, community development and arts and culture organizations.

The largest single piece of charitable giving was by company employees who contributed $3.1 million to the United Way nationwide, the United Arts Fund and the Neighborhood Health Care Network in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.

The company provided more than $1 million in national grants and community action awards. Its remaining contributions were distributed to education, community development, arts and culture, and other programs primarily in Minnesota and Connecticut. Giving also included 15 other states and programs in Canada and England.
