American International Group said it has created a unit to help companies prevent, mitigate and recover from terrorist incidents and other potentially catastrophic events.
The entity–known as AIG Homeland Security Solutions–will offer terrorism- and security-related products and services available through AIG member companies, the firm said.
Robert Cruz, practice leader for the new enterprise described for National Underwriter how the operation assesses risks and makes recommendations for clients.
The new unit's products and services will range from emergency planning and threat assessments, political risk and property terrorism insurance, to crisis management services, AIG explained.
Mr. Cruz gave as an example of the operation's work an assessment that his team performed at a major hotel in Manhattan, which he described as located in a major tourist area near subways.
He said they had examined and made recommendations for the security of its kitchen and food preparation area as well as its heating ventilation and air conditioning system.
Mr. Cruz said the advice given concerned protection against chemical and biological threat and the location had been advised to put in dampers and a warning detection system for its HVAC as well as ultraviolet equipment.
He said the unit also advised the client to obtain a chemical biological threat endorsement for its policy.
If a client accepts its recommendations for remediation, Mr. Cruz said the unit will provide help in securing suppliers and contractors to install the needed equipment.
According to AIG, Homeland Security Solutions has designed its portfolio to be in accordance with the goals of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Infrastructure Protection Plan.
This plan emphasizes government and private-sector collaboration in instituting a comprehensive, systematic assessment and response to risks threatening critical infrastructure and key resources.
Mr. Cruz, was previously AIG's assistant director for corporate security, and developed the company's Emergency Readiness Program.
He noted that despite their security concerns, few companies have adopted “a comprehensive, all-hazard approach to address terrorism risk.”
