The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America announced they have scheduled House Minority Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo, to address members at the group's April Legislative Conference & Convention in Washington.
Rep. Blunt will be a featured speaker at a breakfast on April 26, IIABA said.
According to IIABA, more than 1,200 independent agents and brokers are expected to attend, including agent and broker leaders from Rep. Blunt's home state of Missouri.
The conference is scheduled to run April 25-27 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel.
IIABA Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Rusbuldt said Mr. Blunt "plays a critical role in shaping and advancing legislation affecting independent agents and brokers."
"[Mr.] Blunt is respected by his colleagues, and he's a true mover and shaker in Congress. We're looking forward to hearing his thoughts on insurance regulation, natural disaster, terrorism risk insurance, and other important topics facing our members, their businesses and our nation," Mr. Rusbuldt added.
Mr. Blunt was first elected to Congress in 1997 and most recently was voted another term with 68 percent of the vote. He was re-elected to a third term as Republican Whip in November 2006.
Charles E. Symington Jr., IIABA senior vice president for government affairs and federal relations, said Rep. Blunt would "provide insight into the changed political landscape on Capitol Hill, along with his perspectives on legislative proposals of crucial importance to agents and salient issues facing our country."
In addition to hearing speakers, the organization's agents and brokers hold hundreds of meetings with their elected officials on Capitol Hill. IIABA said this year they will be pressing their views on insurance regulatory reform, natural disaster issues, terrorism risk insurance and other items.
The conference also includes an in-depth issues briefing session, a congressional reception on Capitol Hill and a trade show.
IIABA said this year's event will include an interactive insurance panel discussion, with representatives from the industry, consumer groups and regulators discussing top insurance industry trends and challenges.
