Although it adds to the burden for a region still recovering from the 2005 hurricane season, a tornado that swept through part of New Orleans on Tuesday will likely be only a minor blip on the radar for insurers, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Loretta Worters, a spokesperson for the Institute, said the final extent of damages is not yet known, but she speculated that the storms would constitute a relatively minor event in terms of losses. The tornados, she noted, damaged "maybe a dozen or two homes and a few businesses, some severely."
Overall, she speculated that the final tally for the storms would be less than $25 million in claims for damages.
While property damage is so far relatively minor, at least one death has been attributed to the storm which swept through a region of the city that was still rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, over a dozen people were reportedly injured in the storm.
