Tennessee Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance Paula Flowers announced she plans to leave her job.
Ms. Flowers said she notified Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen of her decision to leave the post she has held for nearly four years, but has set no departure date.
"After careful thought and much discussion with my husband and three sons, I have decided not to continue in my current position," she said in a statement.
As commissioner, Ms. Flowers has expanded regulatory information available to the public as well as revamped the department's information systems.
The Tennessee native previously served as special counsel to the department's TennCare Oversight Division, which is the state's public health insurance program.
