More than 5,000 claims have been filed stemming from the freak early fall storm that dumped up to two feet of snow on the Buffalo area late last week.
The total so far includes 3,300 claims for just New York Central Mutual, which has about one-third of the market share of the Buffalo area, according to spokeswoman Joyce Talbott.
“Most of the claims have come from trees falling on houses and flooded basements,” she said.
That figure is now approaching the 3,500 claims filed from the storm that blanketed the area five years ago and incurred $6.9 million of losses for the company.
State Farm spokesman Robert Mayrose said about 2,500 claims have been filed in connection with the storm with falling trees the main source of damage.
“And we are starting to see some personal claims coming in from the power outage, mainly for spoiled food,” he said.
With temperatures above the freezing mark after the storm, flooding became a problem. In addition, claims have come in for spoiled food and businesses that have had to shut down due to loss of electrical power.
Nationwide Mutual has reported more than 1,000 claims.
