Claim managers' and adjusters' salary levels and gripes about extended work hours and technology are among the topics explored in a recent Claims Magazine study examining pay and working conditions for the sector.

The survey, which is in its 16th incarnation, is performed annually and its findings are reported in Claims each October.

Highlights include an analysis of perks and work tools offered, benefits received, and a breakdown of average salaries for owners, executives, managers and adjusters as reported by the magazine's subscribers.

Readers also were posed questions about workload, company revenue and the number of workers employed at their companies.

Additionally, direct comments from independent and company claim staff members are included, with each person's location, age and individual salary noted. A sampling of the remarks includes:

“Workload is unreasonable and getting more so with time. On the plus side, I no longer have insomnia–I'm too tired to stay awake when I stop work at 1:00 a.m.”

“This job has been one of the most challenging, self-motivating, stressful (I could go on and on) jobs that I have ever had. And I totally love it!”

“Profession? Huh?? Technology has turned this into a part-time clerical position.”
