The National Equipment Register, an equipment theft prevention organization, and personal/home security company Identification Technologies have collaborated on a new identification and registration system in effort to combat equipment theft.

The new system, Heavy Equipment Loss Prevention Technology DNA (HELPtechDNA), is a combination of Identification Technologies' DataDotDNA technology and the National Equipment Register's database. According to the organizations, the DataDotNet system uses thousands of microscopic identification chips containing a unique number that is either painted or sprayed onto machines. These ID chips are part of HELPtechDNA as well, and once applied, all of the unique numbers are registered onto the National Equipment Register's database, which is used by police agencies to identify ownership of equipment.

HELPtechDNA contains the microchips premixed in an adhesive that contains an ultraviolet trace. When a blacklight is held over an area where the adhesive has been applied, it will fluoresce, alerting police officers to their existence. Once located, the HELPtechDNA number can be easily read with a magnifier and the owner located on the NER database.
