Preparing for the monster storm experts say will hit the Northeast some day in the future will be the topic for a conference of insurers, associations, emergency managers, regulators, disaster recovery organizations, the media and disaster-preparedness workers next month.

The Northeast Hurricane Project (NHP) said it will hold its first major conference 49 days into the hurricane season–on July 19 at the Hilton New York, in New York City.

Their one-day event is being coordinated by the Insurance Information Institute to discuss what needs to be done to prepare the Northeast for an inevitable event, NHP said.

The group announced three major goals for the meeting:

o Communicating to the public and media that the risk of a catastrophic hurricane in the Northeast and New England is real and potentially devastating.

o Facilitating coordination and discussion among insurance organizations, local, state and federal emergency management agencies and others about actions that need to be taken now.

o Educating the public that choices made now to prepare for a hurricane will greatly affect recovery from a catastrophic storm.

NHP said the meeting agenda, which is still in formation, will provide time for active discussion by all participants and will include presentations on:

o Hurricane risk in the Northeast.

o Economic consequences.

o Status of preparedness and what still needs to be done.

o Hurricane reporting.

o Evacuation and emergency preparedness plans.

o Coordination of disaster response.

A full agenda and information on registration is available at www.iii.org/media/met/nehurricane, as well as hotel accommodations. NHP said attendance will be limited.
