Willis Group Holdings said Don Bailey has been named chief operating officer of the brokerage's North America business unit.
Mr. Bailey will work with Mario Vitale, chief executive officer of Willis North America, in managing the organization's day-to-day operational and sales activities while also developing and implementing the unit's long-term strategy.
He fills a position which had been open, a spokesman said.
Mr. Bailey joined Willis in March 2003 to lead the company's North American executive risks practice. He was appointed CEO of Willis Risk Solutions North America in March 2004.
Tom Coughlin, who has been COO of Willis Risk Solutions North America since 2000, will succeed Mr. Bailey as CEO of the practice.
