The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents said it will hold its 24th annual Federal Legislative Summit this week, April 5-6, in Washington, D.C.
PIA members from around the nation are scheduled to meet their elected representatives to advance the views and positions of professional insurance agents.
"One of our main issues during this summit is PIA's strong opposition to renewed proposals for optional federal charters for insurers," said Ray L. Peretti, president of the Alexandria, Va.-based association. "Proposals for optional federal charters are like indigestion–something bad that has a tendency to keep coming back."
He said that PIA members will be telling members of Congress that "we oppose optional federal charters, along with anything else that would undermine our system of state-based, functional regulation of insurance, which we support."
PIA said members also will advocate for creation of a national natural catastrophe plan, which they endorsed in September 2005. Other issues include long-term solutions for terrorism insurance, reform of the National Flood Insurance Program and crop insurance.
The summit will begin with a legislative briefing and question and answer session at the Marriott Crystal City in Arlington, Va.
The following day will feature a breakfast program at the Washington Court Hotel. Members will then spend the day meeting lawmakers in their Capitol Hill offices.
A reception will be held later that evening in the Rayburn building. The PIA Political Action Committee will also hold its annual fundraising dinner.
