The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers said it has hired Maura M. Nelson as vice president of marketing and communications, a new position.

Ms. Nelson has a marketing background with the circus and hotel and convention industries, and her “expertise in brand development will prove especially beneficial to our members and the industry,” said Ken A. Crerar, president of the CIAB.

He said Ms. Nelson's appointment will further enhance the Washington, D.C.-based association's marketing and communications programs.

Ms. Nelson previously worked as vice president of marketing and communications for Destination Marketing Association International, an association of convention and visitors bureaus. She also was executive director of the association's research and educational foundation.

Prior to working for DMAI, she spent 10 years with the American Hotel & Lodging Association in Washington, D.C., as vice president of marketing and communications. She also served as national director of public relations for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, in addition to having hotel and agency public relations and marketing experience.
