Deborah Burd was elected chairperson of the board of directors of the Captive Insurance Companies Association at CICA's annual meeting last week where an official said the group will push a higher profile for industry concerns.
The group's 34th International Conference in Orlando, Fla., was its largest yet, according to Dennis Harwick, president of CICA. He said there were more than 450 attendees with the strongest sponsor support so far.
Mr. Harwick told National Underwriter that the association is looking for new opportunities to take a leadership position, adding that being an international association, CICA would likely comment on international or multistate captive issues.
As an example, he noted that CICA had contacted an NAIC task force discussing the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report recommending changes for risk retention groups urging them to give captive state domiciles a vote on the issues.
Mr. Harwick said CICA's networking mission may be expanded to include another layer: "The best and most credible source of information about captives." CICA also is in the process of reengineering its Web site to offer more captive information and resources to members, he added.
In addition to Ms. Burd, the CICA board elected Les Boughner, senior vice president, Zurich Insurance Company, Chicago, Ill., as vice chair; and Mike Lusk, corporate vice president of Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, Decatur, Ill., as secretary treasurer.
Ms. Burd served as president of the Memphis Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) from 2003-2004. She also served as vice-chair of CICA this past year, chairing the conference committee that planned the 2006 International Conference in Orlando.
