J. Douglas Robinson has been named board chairman for the Utica National Insurance Group, and Brian P. Lytwynec has been named president and chief operating officer, the company said yesterday.

The appointments were announced following the joint meeting of Utica National's Boards of Directors at the property-casualty insurer's home office in New Hartford, N.Y.

Mr. Robinson, who is chief executive officer of the Utica National companies, succeeds W. Craig Heston.

Mr. Heston, who joined Utica in 1963 and retired as CEO in 2000, had been chairman since 1988. He has been named chairman emeritus of the Utica National companies.

Mr. Robinson joined Utica National in 1983 and through the years served in a variety of posts. In 1997 he was named UticaLIFE chairman and CEO. He was named CEO in 2000. Mr. Robinson is also a board member of all affiliated Utica National companies.

Mr. Lytwynec joined Utica National in 1981 as an underwriter and became a senior vice president in 1993. Prior to assuming his current post, he served as executive vice president.
