"At first we were trying to be sensitive regarding Charley, but now we are beyond that point. We need to clean it up. We need to get property owners to get moving forward. They are either going to rebuild, renovate, or the structures need to come down for the benefit of the community," said Punta Gorda City Manager Howard Kunik last month.
Hurricane Charley smashed into the city nearly 18 months ago, and Kunik is making it clear he has lost patience with property owners who have not torn down or rebuilt damaged buildings. Procrastinating owners of some 50 buildings now face heavy fines or even a date in court, as they learned in a recent letter calling their structures a health hazard.
