John P. Welch has been named president and chief operating officer of Stamford, Conn.-based XL Reinsurance America Inc. (XLRA), a subsidiary of Bermuda-based reinsurer XL Capital Ltd., the company said.
Mr. Welch began his career at Aetna Life and Casualty's actuarial department in 1987. He joined XLRA in 1997 and has held a variety of positions, including chief actuary and, most recently, head of casualty and surety underwriting.
The company said Mr. Welch will report to James H. Veghte, chairman and chief executive officer of XLRA, and chief executive of XL's Reinsurance General Operations. He will also join XL's Reinsurance Executive Group, composed of the senior officers of the various entities within the company's reinsurance division.
Mr. Veghte said Mr. Welch has a broad range of experience in the actuarial, underwriting, strategic planning and finance disciplines that makes him "ideally suited to assume this leadership role at XLRA, and I also welcome him to XL's Reinsurance Executive Group, which provides overall strategic direction to the company's global reinsurance operations."
Mr. Welch was promoted after Mr. Veghte was named chief executive of XL Reinsurance General Operations earlier this month. As president, Mr. Welch assumes some of Mr. Veghte's responsibilities prior to his promotion as chief executive, according to a spokeswoman.
