The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America said it has awarded more than 70 grants to victims of Hurricane Katrina through the Big “I” Katrina Relief Fund.
The fund has collected over $400,000 from more than 470 contributors, IIABA said. The grants are aimed at helping many individuals and businesses within the insurance community devastated by Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
Plans call for more grants to be awarded in the future. A tally of the total dollars distributed is not yet available, the association said.
The IIABA donated $100,000 to the relief fund with contributions of insurance carriers (Safeco Insurance, Zurich Insurance, OneBeacon Insurance, Allstate Insurance and Encompass Insurance), agents, brokers, IIABA staff and state associations.
Robert A. Rusbuldt, the Alexandria, Va.-based association's chief executive officer, said support the fund has received is overwhelming, and it keeps coming in. “Everyone in the insurance industry is doing what they can to help residents of the Gulf Coast put their lives back together.”
Donations to the fund can be made by check payable to “Big 'I' Katrina Relief Fund” and mailed to: Big “I” Katrina Relief Fund, c/o InsurBanc, 10 Executive Drive, Farmington, CT 06032
