Rare documents that establish Philadelphia as the home to this country's first life insurance company were presented to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by Nationwide Life Insurance Company of America. The documents, which date to the early 1700s, include ledgers and journals that tie Nationwide to the Philadelphia-based Presbyterian Ministers Fund, the original life insurance company in the United States, according to Nationwide.
The materials, including some associated with the family of Pennsylvania founder William Penn, will be on permanent loan to the historical society so that researchers and historians can study the financial views and day-to-day concerns of our country's forefathers.
