From August 2000 to August 2005, the last month for which figures are available, employment in the insurance industry decreased by 42 percent, according to data from the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Despite last August's low unemployment rate, the average for the year was 73,000. A comparison of annual figures over the first years of this decade shows a steady decrease in industry jobs.
