Hurricane Rita threatened to slam into Texas and complicate matters in Louisiana with more rains that could put a strain on the levees late last week as this edition went to press.
By Thursday afternoon, forecasters expected the Category 4 storm to weaken from what had been labeled the third-most intense on record on Wednesday evening. But the National Hurricane Center warned that Rita would still make landfall as a dangerous hurricane of at least a Category 3 level intensity.
