The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers announced that the group has hired Bradley Kading, an expert in U.S. state politics, to be its first president and executive director.
The ABIR represents 18 of Bermuda's Class 4 (highly-capitalized) insurance and reinsurance companies.
Mr. Kading previously served for 14 years as senior vice president and director of state relations at the Reinsurance Association of America, and as chief operating officer of the RAA's Resources Division.
Prior to the RAA, Mr. Kading worked for ten years at the Alliance of American Insurers, working on a variety of legislative and regulation assignments concluding as the Alliance's Director of Government Affairs.
In his new role with ABIR, Mr. Kading will be an advocate on behalf of Bermuda's Class 4 companies in regulatory and industry forums around the world. He will work out of ABIR offices in Hamilton, Bermuda and Washington, the association said.
In addition to being a policy advocacy voice of member carriers to policymakers around the world, ABIR also helps to promote the market in ceding insurer forums.
Commenting on the appointment, ABIR Chairman Brian O'Hara said that Mr. Kading's experience and broad base of regulatory and industry contacts coupled with his extensive knowledge of insurance regulation "will allow ABIR to have a voice that can begin to match [its] members' market presence."
Mr. O'Hara, president and chief executive officer of XL Capital Ltd, added: "As more and more Bermuda insurers and reinsurers grow into market leaders, it's important for ABIR to take an active role in shaping the regulatory environment. The better we do this, the better we can meet our customers' needs. As a result, we've decided to professionalize the association by hiring executive staff."
