The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies said its member companies and their employees have donated $1.375 million to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
"It is the principle upon which our industry was founded--that is 'neighbor helping neighbor'--that exemplifies the spirit in which NAMIC members contributed to the relief effort," said Chuck Chamness, president of NAMIC.
He said many companies matched employee contributions dollar for dollar, and one company matched $10 for every $1 donated to the fund.
Mr. Chamness related that one member insurer dispatched at least three 18-wheelers filled with items such as water, food, clothing, toys and medical supplies to areas in need, and one company provided gift-cards through a local church so evacuees could purchase basic necessities.
