The Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation has addressed concerns related to Hurricane Katrina by issuing orders banning policy cancellations and setting requirements to renew policies for a limited period of time.

Corporation Chief Executive Officer Steven Cavanaugh told the annual winter meeting of the National Conference of Insurance Legislators meeting last week in San Diego that among the storm's impact could be an increase in claims in certain activities.

For instance, he said, claims for contractors and roofers could increase as the pace of repairs pick up.

Coverage for roofers is notoriously expensive due to the higher risk it carries compared to other occupations, Mr. Cavanaugh noted.
