The Insurance Information Institute in New York said because of increased need for its services it has added three economists to its staff.

The new staff members are:

o L. James Valverde Jr., who joins the institute as its new director of economics and risk management. Dr. Valverde formerly served as a visiting economics fellow and assistant director at the Government Accountability Office.

Dr. Valverde has also taught on the faculties of the London School of Economics and the MIT Sloan School. I.I.I. said he will focus his efforts on areas where risk and uncertainty are especially problematic such as strategic decision-making, enterprise risk management, catastrophe/disaster management and terrorism.

o Marcellus W. Andrews, formerly a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation. Dr. Andrews will concentrate on property-casualty insurance, and specifically on auto and homeowners insurance issues. In addition to his work at the New America Foundation, Dr. Andrews has served on the faculties of Wellesley College, Baruch College and the City University of New York.

o Steven Weisbart, a former TIAA-CREF vice president. Dr. Weisbart will serve as an economist focusing on annuities and pensions, life, disability and long term care insurance. Dr. Weisbart has also been an associate professor at Georgia State University's College of Business Department of Risk Management and Insurance.

All of the new staff members will work with the institute's chief economist, Robert Hartwig.
