The Spencer Educational Foundation, which is affiliated with the Risk and Insurance Management Society Inc., announced this year's recipients of the foundation's academic scholarship fund.

Of the 34 scholarships for studies related to risk management, 25 are being awarded to undergraduates, three are in the master's category, three are for pre-dissertation doctoral students, and three are for part-time business administration master's program students.

Awards being presented include: Anita Benedetti Scholar, Wei Chen of St. John's University; Royal & Sun Alliance/Douglas Barlow Memorial Scholar, Gabriel Pringle of Olivet College; and Holwerda Memorial Scholarship, Craig Carpenter of Olivet College.

Since 1980, Spencer said, more than $2.3 million in scholarships and $1.3 million in grants have been awarded to risk management students and universities. In 2005, the foundation awarded $212,000 in scholarships and $145,000 in grants.

Spencer noted a contribution of $10,000 from St. Paul Travelers, XL Group and Zurich Insurance to the foundation's scholarship fund.

Established in 1979 in honor of the late Robert S. Spencer, the foundation is administered by its board of directors and RIMS in New York.
