The Louisiana Department of Insurance has issued a series of Katrina-related emergency rules prohibiting insurance companies from canceling or non-renewing policyholders in storm-impacted counties.

In addition, no company can cancel or non-renew a policy solely because of the storm-related claim. Also, Katrina-affected policyholders will receive an extension on premium payments due after Aug. 26, without late fees or penalties.

Citizens with health insurance coverage in the impacted parishes may receive medical care out of network and prescription medication out of network without penalty, according to the order.

Public adjusters must register with the Department of Insurance and cannot charge a percentage of the final claim as payment but only a flat or hourly fee.

Insurance Commissioner Robert Wooley said Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco signed the executive order Tuesday, giving him the authority to enforce these rules.
