John L. Procope, 82, chairman of the board for the insurance brokerage firm E.G. Bowman Company Inc., in New York, died today of complications from pneumonia.
Mr. Procope became chairman of the board of the insurance brokerage firm founded by his wife, Ernesta G. Procope, in 1982. E.G. Bowman is regarded as one of the largest minority-owned insurance brokerage firms in the nation.
Mr. Procope was president and publisher of The New York Amsterdam News, an African-American oriented newspaper. He was vice president of advertising for Tuesday Publications Inc., marketing director for Slant/Finn Corporation, and a marketing specialist at Batten, Barton, Durston and Osborne Advertising Agency.
Mr. Procope was a past-president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and a trustee of Howard University. He served as a trustee or board member of New York University Graduate School of Business Advisory Board, YMCA of Greater New York, The New York State Crime Commission and other nonprofit organizations. He was a charter member of The New York City Partnership Inc.
He was a graduate of Morgan State University and also attended New York University Graduate School of Business.
Mr. Procope is survived by his wife, two sisters and three nephews.
