Survey: Internet Security A Big Problem For Agents
NU Online News Service, April 7, 3:49 p.m. EST?As Internet-based business transactions become more commonplace, independent insurance agencies are becoming increasingly concerned about their Web security issues, a new survey has found .[@@]
In a survey of 60 independent agencies around the country, 80 percent of the respondents said viruses and worms are their top Internet security concerns. Hackers have also become a big issue, with 42 percent describing it as a major concern.
"Financial losses from viruses were expected to reach a five-year high in 2004, and smaller businesses, like independent agencies, can be more vulnerable because they often have smaller I.T. staffs," explained Clare DeNicola, chief executive of Old Greenwich, Conn.-based e-commerce networking provider Ivans Inc. which conducted the survey.
She also observed that one in 16 e-mails now carry a virus and that insurance agencies should take measures to ensure they are protected.
Ms. DeNicola recommended a number of steps independent agencies can take to protect themselves from Internet security threats. They include:
? Installing anti-virus software and updating it regularly.
? Ensuring that employees are aware of the latest scams and do not open suspicious or unsolicited e-mails.
? Shutting out spyware by upgrading old Windows 95 or 98 platforms, signing up for Microsoft security updates and purchasing anti-spyware utilities.
? Installing an Internet firewall.
? Using authentication procedures, such as digital certificates.
? Disabling passwords and access for departing employees.
? When using wireless networks, ensure their security by buying equipment that supports Wi-Fi protected access encryption.
Ivans Inc. will be hosting a free online educational seminar for agents on April 29. Interested agents can sign up at www.ivans.com/agentexpress or by calling 1-800-288-4826.
