Kodak Debuts Archive Service

NU Online News Service, April 26, 4:22 p.m. EDT?Eastman Kodak Company today announced the creation of an archiving service that insurers and other companies can use to preserve digital data that deteriorates over time.[@@]

The company said the Reference Archive Services Network (RASN) is made up of outsourcing partners that provide digital-to-film writing services on behalf of companies.

According to Rochester, N.Y.-based Kodak, digitally stored data begins to degrade after about seven years. To overcome this problem, they recommend microfilm as an alternative storage medium for long-term preservation of business documents.

Using Kodak's digital-to-film writers and specially designed microfilm, RASN members receive training, support and monitoring from the company, said Kodak.

RASN members can also provide their customers with the Kodak Digital Reference Archive Creator, desktop software that helps companies identify digital documents that are to be written to microfilm and to transmit them to their outsourcing partners.

"The network is designed to be a resource companies can utilize to ensure the proper preservation of their digital documents on microfilm," said Roger Markham, marketing manager, Kodak Document Imaging Products.

Mr. Markham explained that, "Just as consumers seek ASE-certified mechanics (National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence) to work on their cars, companies now can turn to RASN members to provide trust and confidence in their records management."

By using RASN members, companies can more easily manage archiving of digital documents, regardless of whether the documents were originally digital or were scanned, said Kodak.

Records managers can use the Archive Creator software to choose and transmit documents directly to their outsourcing partners. The documents then can be written to microfilm. The software, Kodak added, is available only through RASN members.

According to Kodak, more than 20 service bureaus have signed up as members of the RASN program to date. Further details, as well as a list or RASN members, are available at www.kodak.com/go/rasn.
