Acting Indiana Commissioner Gets Permanent Nod
NU Online News Service, Feb. 24, 2:36 p.m. EST?Indiana's acting insurance commissioner, Jim Atterholt, was named Indiana insurance commissioner by Gov. Mitch Daniels.[@@]
The announcement, made Monday, came after the governor's first choice, Evansville, Ind., insurance agent Harold Calloway, withdrew his name from consideration, citing the strain the job would put on his State Farm agency.
Appointed acting commissioner on Jan. 17, Mr. Atterholt was first named chief deputy commissioner after last fall's election, in which the GOP took the governor's office for the first time since 1988. He was part of the governor's transition team.
Prior to assuming that role, Mr. Atterholt served two years as director of state government affairs for AT&T Indiana.
Mr. Atterholt served as a state representative from 1998 to 2002, losing his seat by a whisker in a newly redrawn district. He also worked as district director for Congressman Dan Burton, R-5th Dist., from 1992 to 2002.
