Ex-CNA Head Leaving Gallagher Board

NU Online News Service, Jan. 7, 3:37 p.m. EST?Bernard L. Hengesbaugh, the former chief executive of CNA Financial Corporation, is leaving his position with the board of directors of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. to join a major medical association.[@@]

In a statement, Itasca, Ill.-based Gallagher said that he is leaving his post to become chief operating officer of the American Medical Association.

In an announcement, the AMA said Mr. Hengesbaugh, 58, would assume his position immediately. He will oversee key elements of the AMA, including business operations, administrative services, information technology and professional relations, the association said.

His departure from the Gallagher board comes at the end of his term in May.

Mr. Hengesbaugh left his post as chief executive officer of Chicago-based CNA in 2002 but remained chairman until last year. Stephen W. Lilienthal, who took over from Mr. Hengesbaugh as CEO of CAN, is also chairman today.
