Famous Fraud Expert To Bolster NAIC Campaign

San Francisco

If you liked the 2002 hit movie Catch Me If You Can, you just might love the new upcoming anti-fraud campaign by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The NAIC announced that in coming weeks it will roll out a comprehensive campaign to increase awareness of fraudulent insurance sales and that the new campaigns spokesman will be Frank Abagnalea famed con-artist and securities expert whose life story was portrayed in the movie by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Mr. Abagnale certainly has the experience. For our spokesperson, we wanted someone with a national recognition and a media appeal and a strong tie to the issue at hand. I understand hes been assisting the FBI for more than 25 years, said Nevada Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman, who chairs the NAIC Unauthorized Entity Media Outreach Subgroup.

She said the nationwide anti-fraud campaign will focus on public education about the sales of unauthorized insurance policies in all lines. We believe mass communication is one of the most effective means for stopping this abuse, she observed. Through this campaign, and Mr. Abagnales credible presence, we are getting the word out to a national audience.

Ms. Molasky-Arman said NAIC is also looking for fraud victims to come and speak out about their experiences in the campaign. I believe that we still need to have some victims who are not ashamed to tell their story, and if any of the states know individuals who might be willing to share what has happened to them, and to teach others how to avoid such fraud, it would be very, very helpful, she said.
