NU Online News Service, Dec. 7, 4:22 p.m. EST?The Hartford last night became the third insurer to announce it has been subpoenaed by the New York attorney general's office for information concerning its underwriting practices for legal malpractice insurance.[@@]
Yesterday, National Underwriter reported that Hamilton, Bermuda-based Arch Capital Group, Ltd., and Cincinnati-based American Financial Group Inc. said they received subpoenas requesting information on the same subject.
"Last Thursday, we received a subpoena from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office and we immediately began the process of cooperating with his office on this matter," said Joshua King, a spokesman for the Hartford.
He declined to elaborate on the exact nature of the information of the attorney general's request or to characterize if the information sought was related to contingency commission probe.
In October, the Hartford announced it received subpoenas from Mr. Spitzer in his office's probe of contingency fee abuses. The company has subsequently been contacted by other attorneys general and insurance regulators in their own probes of contingency fees.
