Quake Strikes Central California

NU Online News Service, Sept. 28, 4:23 p.m. EDT?An earthquake recorded as a 6 on the open ended Richter scale struck central California today, with no initial reports of damage.[@@]

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 10:15 a.m. PDT, and was centered seven miles southeast of Parkfield, Calif.

Initial reports coming out of California indicate that there was little damage caused by the quake.

Patty Lombard, a spokesperson for the Insurance Brokers & Agents of the West, based in Oakland, Calif., said it was too early to tell the extent of the earthquake, but local reports did not indicate significant damage in the state.

Magnitude 6 earthquakes have been known to cause damage to poorly constructed buildings and other structures that are close by the epicenter.
