Comdex Is Canceled For 2004

NU Online News Service, June 24, 4:19 p.m. EDT?This year's Comdex computer industry trade show, an international exposition that once drew more than 200,00 attendees- including vendors who serve the insurance industry, has been cancelled.

In the aftermath of the cancellation, organizers are scrambling to re-cast the conference for future years.

According to a report on CNET News.com, MediaLive International, organizer of the event, "plans to give Comdex a breather after years of falling attendance, in the number of both attendees and vendors."

While Comdex attendance peaked four years ago, a number of key vendors, including Hewlett Packard and Dell, have chosen to focus their energies on consumer-oriented shows such as the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The events of 9/11 and a lackluster economy also contributed to the decline of Comdex, the report said.

The report noted that an advisory board, composed of key technology vendors, has been formed to "rally support" for the annual conference.

MediaLive said that Comdex, which was first held in 1979, will be back in 2005. International versions of the conference are expected to continue as planned.
