By Caroline Mcdonald

NU Online News Service, April 13, 4:30 p.m. EST?A spokesman for the California Insurance Department said specifics are not available, but a workers' compensation package has been agreed upon by legislative leaders in Sacramento.[@@]

"There has been some kind of a deal reached in the legislature," said Norman Williams, spokesperson for Commissioner John Garamendi, adding that "The key parties have agreed upon something that will be voted upon and they expect it to pass." He said that legislation may be passed later this week

According to Mr Williams "as soon as language is written on paper and ready to go, it will be voted on and passed through." However, he noted, "We do not have the language or much information about what the bill contains."

He said Mr. Garamendi is pleased that the Legislature seems to be "moving along, he hopes they do the deal soon and do it right so he can move to pass on any savings to employers this year–by July 1."

Mr. Williams added that "there are a number of ideas from a number of bills that went into it, and we have not seen the final product so we can't speculate on what's in it."

Nicole Mahrt, spokesperson for the American Insurance Association in Sacramento said that, "We're hearing rumblings that things might start moving in the next day or so."

Ms. Mahrt said that a rate regulation bill that passed the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee yesterday, SB 16, sponsored by Sen Richard Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, was "egregious," and "not something that we would pay any attention to."
